Flow Meters in Mechanical Systems

For engineers, consultants, facility operators and owners, these are some of the common issues faced by our building industry today.

Common challenges in HVAC flow metering

Lack of Flow Information

Accurate easily accessible information on flow levels is a rarity in HVAC systems. Flow meters are often not installed. If they are installed, they are often not well maintained, leading to unreliable flow data.

Lack of Data on System Performance

Traditional HVAC pumping systems operate with no reliable data on system performance. Even if performance data are available, the available feedback does not include suggestions for corrective actions. In contrast, Design Envelope pumps are self-aware, and are capable of self regulating and adjusting to meet changing system requirements. The data and alerts for corrective actions support improved system performance through cloud connectivity.

Inaccurate Flow Measurement and Control

Pressure sensors used in traditional installations on the load side often present installation problems and are subject to drift and reliability issues. Design Envelope pumps provide easy control of pumps to support optimized system performance, while ensuring that building loads are satisfied. Intelligent Sensorless variable speed control reduces installation complexity and lowers first cost.

Exessive Redundancy

HVAC system designs often build in excessive redundancy for duty-standby. Other systems will include no redundant pump at all. While the benefits of parallel pumping include saving energy and reducing installation costs over conventional duty-standby configurations with an opportunity to design for appropriate redundancy.

Oversized Components

Oversized pumps and motors, wall-mounted VFDs on variable speed pumps lead to higher installation costs and reduced efficiencies. Design Envelope pumps are mechanically integrated to reduce installation, start up and operating costs.
