Flow Meter Use

Where are Flow Meters used and how do they help?

Flow Meter Use

What specific functions are flow meters used for in HVAC? Most use cases fit into four key categories.

The first is test and balancing. When a pump is started and commissioned, its performance needs to be confirmed and tuned to meet system conditions.
Second is the protection of chillers and boilers, where minimum flow rates are required.
The third function is to support energy performance. Knowing the flow rate allows managers to measure heat loads and determine delta T values.
Fourth is troubleshooting and maintenance. Knowing the flow rate greatly simplifies any troubleshooting activity and supports predictive maintenance.

Where are flow meters used in HVAC systems?

They are typically used in chilled water systems, often on the variable primary loop. The flow rate is used to provide information on the chilled water system, and the flow meter is connected to a bypass valve which is used to bypass flow back to the chillers.
Flow meters are also found on Hot Water or boiler water systems. Flow switches may be used instead of a flow meter.
For HVAC systems with cooling towers, flow meters are often installed in the water supply and return lines. Monitoring the flow of water through the cooling tower is important for maintaining optimal heat exchange efficiency.
Flow meters can also be placed in circuits involving heat exchangers to measure and control the flow of fluids, ensuring efficient transfer of thermal energy between the air and the fluid.
