Maintain and Extend Performance

Close the Performance Gap

The term Performance Gap refers to the disparity between predicted and actual energy use in buildings. A study of 62 non-residential buildings found an average performance gap of more than 30% with a standard deviation of 55%.

causes of performance gap impact on building energy use
Specification uncertainty in modeling 20 to 60%
Occupant behavior
10 to 80%
Poor operational practices 15 to 80%

A study was conducted recently on 16 commercial/institutional buildings with central chilled water plants. Review of a full year of operating data revealed that 31% of chilled water pumps and 62% of condenser pumps had been set to “In-Hand” mode with the digital controls switched off or disabled.

Efficiency loss was estimated to be 27%

With heating and cooling represent more than 35% of energy costs for a building, the opportunities for cost savings through Performance Management are simply too big to ignore.
